Bullied by both teachers and students at school, Billy steals a kestrel chick, which he then raises and pours all his love and passion into. The story highlights the harshness of Billy's life in a town that has lost its industry and depicts his lack of any real aspirations in life, where his only escape is his kestrel. The book is a mix of hopelessness, broken dreams, humour, and Northern banter, and is a very touching novel.
