- It all starts with the painter Basil Hallward drawing a portrait of a young man named Dorian Gray with his extraordinary beauty. Dorian is so fascinated by the young and beautiful state he sees in the portrait that he spends the rest of his life in ambition to preserve his image on the canvas. Lord Henry Wotton, who opens his passions and desires that even he is not aware of, leads Dorian to degenerate day by day in pursuit of beauty, lust and pleasure. Portrait of Dorian Gray breaks the patterns of sexuality and takes a philosophical approach to the concepts of aesthetics, beauty and art.Oscar Wilde's sensational novel The Portrait of Dorian Gray arouses curiosity with its publication story as well as what is happening in the text. Five years after the novel was published, Wilde overnight transformed from the most colorful figure in English literature into a sex offender. Quotations from the novel are presented to the author as evidence during the hearings in which he is tried on the grounds that he is gay. No matter what happened in those days, the novel differs from its contemporaries in that it creates a break in the perception of sexuality and masculinity of the period and carries easily visible traces from the author's life. While readers and critics ponder which people the characters are inspired by in the author's real life, he says: It contains a lot of me.
